any engine depending on how much weight its pulling will require a certain amount of fuel. its wrong belief that by cutting down the fuel intake the engine will be able to perform the same way as if it were given correct fuel intake. the only thing that happens is by cutting down fuel intake you tend to push engine more to pull the vechicle , result is engine wears out quickly. during past yr i drove a 1.3l car with diffirent air/fuel ratio mixture and found out the distance travelled is almost same if car is running on rich a/f mixture or normal. the only diffirence was low fuel intake gave poor rpm revs and rich mixture gave much btter results in reving., so better less fuel consumption depends a lot on vechicle's weight too apart from wind directions, type of tires, kind of road, amount of traffic on road with or w/o a.c( how much gear change) and many other factors. another factor is if you use regular low octane fuel it will give less mileage than hi -octane fuel. cause of difirence in burning power
