A malfunctioning EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve in a Hilux can lead to increased emissions, rough idling, poor fuel efficiency, and power loss. This happens when carbon buildup clogs the valve, preventing it from properly recirculating exhaust gases.

Common symptoms include engine knocking, black smoke from the exhaust, a check engine light, o r hesitation during acceleration. The most effective solution is to clean the EGR valve and passages using a carbon cleaner o r EGR spray. If the valve is severely clogged o r stuck open/closed, replacing the EGR valve is necessary.

Regular maintenance, using high-quality fuel, and periodic EGR system cleaning can prevent excessive carbon buildup. In some cases, an ECU reprogram o r software update may be required to optimize EGR function. If the EGR-related check engine light appears, scanning for error codes with an OBD-II scanner can help diagnose the exact issue early.
