Battery Terminals

I have noticed in a number of car's battery that one of its terminal is covered (red one) and other uncovered & open,why is that?

red is the positive and it is covered in case you or some part touching you or the car touches it and completes a circuit which would lead to a a nast shock or even death. Sadly people disregard this safety point and forget to put a cover or some sort of insulation on the positive terminal.
