CNG Basics
CNG Basics
I am planning to get CNG installed in my Chevrolet Exclusive. Can some 1 guide me about the basics of CNG, so that i can get the best deal. Like
1. Whether it is required to get modulator, emulator or whatever installed?
2. Which kit to prefer.
3. How to check that cylinder in certified.
4. Any information about the switch?
5. What is without hole installation?
6. Which size of cylinder is good, so that it doesnot affect the back board with Speakers etc
7. What are the water pipes, whether they are required or not. why usually people dont get them installed?
8. Any other thing you recomend?
Thank you all in advance.

I am answering you to the best of my knowledge
1. It is required to install emulator and TAP (Timming advancer)
2. Italian kits like Landi Renzo are best.
3. On the neck of the cylinder there will be marking indicating that it is tested and certified.
4. The switch for EFI cars is two positioned. Petrol /CNG. However try to get an indicator with mulitiple LEDS whcih shows the quantity of the remaining CNG in many positions.
5.Its safe to pass the CNG pipe from the boot to engine area from outside the passanger cabin. For this a hole needs to be drilled to pass the pipe from the boot to below the floor pan. Its not safe to pass CNG from the passenger cabin as any leakage can cause harm to occupants. Similarly CNG cylinder must be strongly fixed and it is only possible if holes are drilled on the boot floor and cylinder frame is bolted to the floor. Without drilling holes it is not safe to install the CNG cylinder.
6. I think 50 kg is a good standard size for small hatchbacks.
7. Water pipes are instaled to route hot water from the radiator to CNG kit body. As CNG is regulated from high pressure to low pressure in CNG kit its temperature drops. If you are a science student refer to Pascal's law. Because of this temperature drop there is sometimes a chance that freezing will take place. In Pakistan even in winters temperature does not drop very low, therefore the chance of freezing is less. However installing water pipes is beneficial and not harmful. In summer you can put it to off position if it has a valve.
7. Try to get everything installed from the sealed kit pack. Do not let mechanic to install from left overs from previous kits. When pipes are passed from body holes, ensure that rubber gomets are used so that pipes should not rub with metal edges and get damaged.
This is best to my knowledge and I hope that other members will correct me where ever I had gone wrong. I have only a limited experience with CNG vehicles as here in China CNG is not yet very popular. Good luck with your project. I like you planning it is very systematic and logical.
