Corolla n civic RPM hopping

Corolla n civic RPM hopping

i was just getting curious abt the RPM status of these two cars. i noticed that civic's (exi)RPM roams around 4000 at 100 km/hr in 4th gear. contrary to that, corollas RPM (even Altis) hovers around 3000 for 100km/hr. i know it has to do wid gear ratios but wont it result in more fuel consupmtion? (civic) n y it is like this?

design feature yar. Ofcourse is cos of gear ratio but dosnt necessarily means higher fuel consumption. At higher speeds consumption is more of a function of drag and static friction of car and not the RPM.
