disk brakes are for more demanding applications...
under normal/routine braking, a drum brake is not inferior to a disk brake....however, when the going gets tough, disks show their advantages because...
1. When heated, a disk expands towards the pads, therby lessening the force required to brake; while a drum expands away from shoe, requiring more effort
2. Braking surface in disk is exposed to outside air at all times even during actual braking so heat dessipation is better than an enclosed drum
3. In water/rain, disks perform better since water doesnt stay on the disk whereas it remains on the drums.
IMPORTANT: Its a common mis conception here in pak that ppl/mechanics say that disk brakes get hot quickly and are hotter to touch than drums so they are overheating..WRONG WRONG!! in fact on a car equipped with a front disk and rear drums, more heat seems to be coming from the front wheels because the front wheels take 80% of braking load and secondly, the disks are designed to dessipate heat out in a much better way than drums...that is on a car with disk/drum (F/R) setup, the rear wheels may seem less hotter because the heat is inside the drums and comes out slowly..the front wheels warm quickly cause the disks rapidly dish heat outwards!!
FX and Mehran are lightweight, less demanding cars so no need of disks at rear..front disks are enough
