Yes, when the Hilux is fully loaded, Ive definitely noticed an increase in fuel consumption. The extra weight from carrying cargo, passengers, o r towing a trailer puts more strain on the engine, which causes it to work harder and consume more fuel.
For example, when Im towing a heavy load o r carrying a lot of cargo in the bed, the fuel economy tends to by a noticeable margin. I think this is especially true when towing large o r heavy equipment because the engine has to overcome the added resistance. In those cases, I typically see a 10-20% decrease in fuel efficiency, depending on the weight being towed o r carried.
Similarly, when the Hilux is fully loaded with passengers, I’ve observed a slight in mileage, especially if I’m carrying 4-5 people o r a lot of heavy gear. Even though the effect isnt as pronounced as when towing o r carrying very heavy cargo, it still results in slightly higher fuel consumption. The suspension also gets affected, making the ride feel less smooth, and the engine has to work harder to maintain power, which in turn impacts fuel efficiency.
On rough terrains, where there’s an additional strain from the uneven surface, fuel consumption also tends to rise, especially if the Hilux is carrying a heavy load.
However, when I make sure to adjust my driving habits—by driving more conservatively, avoiding rapid acceleration, and maintaining steady speeds—I can somewhat offset the increased fuel consumption. If the load is well-balanced and properly secured, that also helps reduce drag and keeps things more efficient.
I’ve also noticed that with lighter loads, like just one o r two passengers and light cargo, the Hilux performs almost as well as when it’s empty. So, managing the weight and making sure not to overload helps minimize the impact on fuel economy.
Do you notice a significant difference in mileage when youre carrying heavy loads o r towing?
