Does the Type of Engine Oil Affect the Toyota Hilux’s Oil Consumption?

Some owners say switching to synthetic o r a different viscosity oil helps reduce oil consumption. Have you tried changing oil types, and did it make a difference?

Yes, the type and viscosity of oil can impact oil consumption.

Low Viscosity Oil e.g., 0W-20, 5W-30: Thinner oil can burn off more quickly, especially in older engines.
Synthetic vs. Conventional Oil: Full synthetic oils generally reduce friction and wear but may be consumed faster in older engines.
Toyota-Recommended Oil: Toyota recommends 5W-30 o r 10W-40 depending on the model and climate conditions.

Switching to a slightly thicker oil e.g., 10W-40 in high-mileage Hilux models can sometimes help reduce consumption.
