A sulfur-like smell rotten egg odor in a Hilux usually indicates a failing catalytic converter, improper fuel mixture, o r bad fuel quality. This happens when sulfur in the fuel isn’t properly converted into odorless sulfur dioxide, often due to a clogged o r overheated catalytic converter o r excess unburned fuel reaching the exhaust system.

A common cause is a malfunctioning oxygen sensor, which disrupts the air-fuel mixture, leading to rich fuel combustion. Replacing a faulty O2 sensor o r performing an ECU diagnostic scan can help identify the issue.

Using low-quality o r high-sulfur fuel can also contribute to this smell. Switching to higher-quality, low-sulfur diesel o r gasoline helps reduce the odor.

If the catalytic converter is clogged o r failing, it can’t break down exhaust gases efficiently, causing a strong sulfur smell. In this case, the best solution is to replace the catalytic converter.

To prevent this issue, regularly maintaining the fuel system, ensuring proper combustion, and using high-quality fuel can help keep the exhaust system and catalytic converter functioning properly.
