A malfunctioning emissions system in a Hilux can lead to poor fuel economy, rough engine performance, and increased exhaust emissions. If you’ve noticed a in mileage, the cause could be a clogged EGR valve, faulty oxygen sensor, dirty fuel injectors, a failing catalytic converter, o r a blocked DPF Diesel Particulate Filter.

A dirty o r stuck EGR valve can cause excessive fuel consumption by disrupting the air-fuel ratio. Cleaning o r replacing the EGR valve can improve efficiency. Similarly, a faulty oxygen sensor can send incorrect readings to the ECU, leading to a rich fuel mixture—replacing a bad O2 sensor often restores proper combustion.

A clogged fuel injector can also reduce efficiency by delivering too much o r too little fuel. Using fuel injector cleaners o r performing a manual injector cleaning can help restore smooth operation. A blocked DPF can cause excessive fuel consumption due to increased exhaust backpressure—forcing a DPF regeneration o r cleaning it manually can help.

Regular maintenance, high-quality fuel, checking tire pressure, and keeping air filters clean can help maintain optimal fuel efficiency. Using an OBD-II scanner to check for error codes when fuel consumption rises can help identify emissions-related issues early.
