Many Hilux owners have experienced the check engine light CEL turning on due to faulty oxygen sensors, EGR Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve issues, o r catalytic converter problems. These components play a crucial role in emissions control and engine efficiency, and any malfunction can lead to reduced performance, poor fuel economy, o r increased emissions.

A faulty oxygen O2 sensor can cause incorrect air-fuel mixture readings, leading to rough idling, higher fuel consumption, and power loss. The solution is to scan for error codes using an OBD-II scanner and replace the defective sensor if needed.

A clogged o r malfunctioning EGR valve can lead to carbon buildup, rough engine performance, o r excessive exhaust smoke. Cleaning the EGR valve and passages o r replacing the unit can restore proper function.

If the catalytic converter is clogged, it can restrict exhaust flow, causing reduced acceleration and overheating. In such cases, a catalytic converter replacement is necessary.

To prevent these issues, regular engine maintenance, using high-quality fuel, and periodic cleaning of the EGR system can help keep the oxygen sensors, EGR valve, and catalytic converter in good condition. If the check engine light appears, using a diagnostic scanner to identify the fault early can prevent more serious engine problems.
