Some Hilux owners have reported transmission slipping between gears, particularly under acceleration. This issue can be caused by low o r degraded transmission fluid, a worn-out clutch for manual transmissions, a faulty torque converter, o r internal gearbox issues.
One common cause is low o r contaminated transmission fluid, which can lead to poor gear engagement and slipping. Checking the fluid level and condition is the first step—if it’s dirty o r low, a fluid top-up o r complete transmission fluid change can help restore performance.
For automatic Hilux models, a worn-out torque converter o r faulty solenoids can cause slipping, especially when shifting between gears. In such cases, scanning for error codes using an OBD-II scanner can help identify the problem. If necessary, replacing faulty solenoids o r repairing the torque converter may be required.
For manual Hilux models, a worn clutch o r pressure plate can cause gear slippage and delayed engagement. If the clutch is slipping under load, a clutch replacement is usually the best fix.
To prevent transmission slipping, regular fluid changes, avoiding aggressive driving, and servicing the gearbox at recommended intervals can help maintain smooth and reliable gear shifts.
