Running the AC in hot weather does definitely have an impact on fuel efficiency, especially in a vehicle like the Hilux, which is a larger and heavier truck. From my experience, I’ve noticed that fuel consumption tends to increase by about 10-20% when the AC is on, depending on the driving conditions.

Here are a few things I do to balance comfort and fuel economy while using the AC:

Use the AC Sparingly: On longer trips o r when driving at higher speeds like on highways, I turn the AC on to keep the cabin comfortable. However, I try to avoid running it when driving in slow traffic o r on short trips. The AC compressor can put extra load on the engine, which reduces fuel efficiency, especially at lower speeds.

Use the Recirculate Mode: I always keep the AC set to recirculate rather than fresh air. This helps the system cool the air more efficiently because it’s cooling the already chilled air inside the cabin rather than bringing in hot outside air, which requires more energy to cool.

Cool the Cabin Before Driving: If the truck has been sitting in the sun, I’ll open the windows for a few minutes before starting the AC. This helps get rid of the hottest air in the cabin, allowing the AC to cool the space faster and use less energy. Once the cabin temperature is under control, I’ll close the windows and turn the AC to a comfortable setting.

Drive at Higher Speeds on Highways: If I’m on the highway and the AC is on, I try to maintain a constant speed of around 90-100 km/h. At this speed, the engine is operating more efficiently, and the added load from the AC is less noticeable. Driving slower, especially in city traffic, has a much greater impact on fuel efficiency when the AC is on.

Park in the Shade: I try to park in shaded areas o r use sunshades on the windows whenever possible. This helps keep the cabin cooler, reducing the need to run the AC at full blast when I get back in the truck. A cooler cabin means the AC doesn’t have to work as hard to reach the desired temperature.

Consider Using the Vent: In mild heat, I sometimes use the ventilation setting o r just keep the windows slightly open to let fresh air in. This works best when the outside temperature isn’t too hot, and it can reduce the need for AC altogether.

Regular AC Maintenance: Keeping the AC system in top condition can help it run more efficiently. I ensure that the AC filter is clean and replace it if necessary. I also get the system checked regularly for refrigerant levels and potential leaks. An efficiently working AC system won’t have to work as hard to cool the cabin, which indirectly helps reduce the fuel penalty.

In extreme heat o r long road trips, I usually don’t mind the extra fuel usage because the comfort level is a priority. However, on short trips o r in moderate temperatures, I try to use these tips to strike a balance between comfort and fuel economy.

What about you? Have you found any specific strategies that work for keeping the cabin cool without wasting too much fuel?
