Unlike traditional automatic transmissions that use gears and a torque converter, the eCVT in the Prius uses a combination of a planetary gear set and electric motors to seamlessly adjust power delivery to the wheels.

Advantages:
Smooth driving experience: Continuous, smooth acceleration without the noticeable shifts seen in traditional automatics.
Improved fuel efficiency: The system can optimize engine RPMs for better fuel consumption.
Disadvantages:
The eCVT can sometimes feel less responsive than a traditional automatic, especially in aggressive driving situations.
It can be prone to whining o r unusual noises when components are not functioning optimally.
