These are a few common causes of `engine cease`:-
1.Low or no engine oil(due to leakage or weak engine)
2.low or no engine coolant(Due to leakage)
3.Jammed radiator fan leading to engine over heating
4.Engine coolant valve malfunction
5.Automatic Fan Relay(This varies with engine type e.g Alto,Mehran,Corolla,Civic,City,Baleno,Liana,Cultus )
6.Check Fan Belt(This varies with engine type e.g Bolan,Ravi,Potohar)
7.Clogged oil filter
8.Damaged Gas Kit leading to engine over heating
9.Timing Belt
For avoiding these conditions you can take the following measures:-
1.Check engine oil level before you start the vehicle in the morning.Inspect around engine for any visible oil sepage.Inspect ground area where vehicle engine was located for possible oil leaks.
2.Check coolant water level and observe the amount of water reduced by radiater. If this amount increases then this denotes a possible leak and needs investigation
3.Move the radiator fan with hand to see that it is properly moving freely without hinderance.Sometimes mild hovering sound is heard while fan if revolving, this mostly denotes weak or partially damaged fan motor bearing.
4.After starting vehicle, you may have noted that at a certain temperature vehicle automatic radiator fan starts. Now if there is a problem with coolant valve then the fan starts but vehicle temperature still increases(when coolant level is Full).Same is for vehicle with Fan belt type radiator fans.Only difference there fans work after engine starts and after reaching certain temperature remain constant.
5.As already stated, after starting vehicle, you may have noted that at a certain temperature vehicle automatic radiator fan starts. Now if there is a problem with Automatic Fan Relay then the fan will not start and engine temperture will rise(when coolant level is Full & radiator fan is 100% working)
6.Inspect fan belt for cracks or breakage
7.To be safe, change oil filter with every second oil change if oil is changed on recommended periodic schedule. If clogged results in loss of acceleration power, slight jerks while engine idle at low speeds, engine damage or `cease`.
8.Observe engine temperature while putting A/C `On` or placing load of luggage or passengers on engine.Temperature usually remains in high region and can even enter red zone denoting problem(When Coolant system and engine oil level are normal)
9.Timing belt in OHC/SOHC,DOHC technology engines does`nt cause any harm but in old engine can lead to disaster as think, what will happen if the valve is in open state and the piston hits it--`engine cease`.It is recommended to replace timing belt according to the maintanance schedule of your vehicle type
