Need Info About Gaskit of Margalla

Hi can any body tell me whats the purpose of gaskit in margalla, my mechanic was saying that it is not working properly it should be changed, so i want to confirm whats the purpose of gaskit, many thanks.

Gaskit serves as a joint between engine head and crank block.
It protects the car from over heating in simple words.
Purpose of gaskits are more scientific.
Commonly it is made of asbestose sheet sandwitched by two thin layers of copper,some times a singal unit sheet and of many more materials.
