The Hachiroku (Japanese for 86) is varient of the 5th Gen Corolla and is considered one of the finest (and last) specimens ever put out by the manufacturer. The model, from 1984, moved the Corolla four and five dr sedans into front wheel drive, but the two dr coupe (AE85 and AE86), three dr "liftback" (TE72), three dr van and five dr wagon (Sprinter Carib) continued on the older rear wheel drive platform.
The AE86 was availble as either the Sprinter Trueno (GT APEX) or the Levin. One distinguished from the other by the head light arrangment. The Sprinter got popups and the Levin got Clear grille. The USDM variants were the SR-5 and the GT-S (AE85 and AE86 respectivly).
The real gem in the crown that was the Hachiroku was the venerable 4A-GE (4A-GEU for the USDM with AFM and TVIS).
The car was mostly overlooked by most but loved by the enthusiasts especially the hashiraya street racers that used it for dirving through mountain passes or the "touge". Then came initial D and the rest is history.
