No Damage if Timing Belt breaks in Civic??

Hi guys, as u all know, engine damage may result if a timing belt of a moving car breaks.. but ive heard that due to engine design, if timing belt breaks in a civic.. no damage happens.. is that right?? By the way, two of my friends got it broken, one with exi 2002 model, and one with ex 95 model, and no engine damage happened.. ur comments pls.. TC

Its because of engine design or more appropriatly, cylinder head design. Cylinder heads with the aforementioned capability are known as "non-interference" heads, meaning that if the timing belt snaps or breaks, the piston face does not make contact with the valves. whilst most (gasoline) OHC and newer engines have this characteristic diesel engines do not because of them being comprssion ignition engines.
