the oil pump is easily removed once the oil pump cover plate (end of crank case plate under crank shaft pulley). remove the 4 retaining nuts and removce gears out of hte pump body. the pump body is situated over the same 4 nuts and is clamped between the 2 halves of the crank case. to remove the pump from the engine without splitting the case you'll need a special tool which fits over the studs, locks to the inside of the body and pulls it out.without the tool, you'll need to slacken the crankcase clamping studs above and below the pump to release the pressure on the body (pump). once this is done, a pointed toll (like a chisel) can be tapped against the outer edges of the pump which will slide over the studs. make a note to NOT force the tool (chisel) between the gaps as it can damage the pump body and the crankcase and could mess up the alignment when re-fitting it.

the main piston of the relief valve is flat/smooth and should be a loose fit in the bore of the crank casze. any signs of siezure should mean tha t you need to replace the valve.

the spring should be cleaned and checked, the correct specs are: under a load of 17lbs (7 1/4 kgs) should be 0.9inches (23.6mm) .

in some cases there is a pressure regualting valves (post 1970) and in that case the lenght of the spring under load 9.6lbs (4.35kg) the length should be 0.7 inches (16.8mm). please note that if you DO NOT have any way to measure the values of the springs (such as in PK) you should just replace them if possible.
