P90 + ADCOM = The Bomb!

P90 + ADCOM = The Bomb!

Well guys, most of you chronic audio guys will be aware of my latest upgrade since you would have seen them at Kallar Kahar GTG. So this is it, presenting my latest upgrades/additions: Pioneer P90rs headunit and Adcom high current amplifiers

Pioneer DEX-P90rs

The ultimate in pure, natural sound.

The striking white OEL display and aluminium front make a certain style statement on the outside, while on the inside, 16-bit digital CD data is directly transferred by 24-bit multi-bit D/A converters, with minimun distortion and the natural sound expression intact.
Audiophiles will certainly appreciate the high-quality parts, ultra-precise mechanisms and high-performance construction

ADCOM Car Audio is dedicated to delivering the highest quality and performance available in mobile fidelity today. We offer a line of amplifiers and accessories that are unsurpassed in their sonic capabilities, power handling abilities, innovation in design, and ruggedness.

ADCOM Car Audio products take the wealth of experience ADCOM has accumulated in our twenty years of manufacturing High Current Amplifiers for the home, and has unleashed it onto the street in a product that is designed, engineered, and manufactured in the U.S.A. .

There's no skimping here! Wether it's the components used, the chassis materials, or the technical support - ADCOM represents the finest quality at affordable prices. All of our amplifiers are built using International Rectifier's HexFet (tm) technology, regarded as the finest MosFet device available. Heavy duty, high current, hand wound custom torroidal transformers are used in all models to deliver as much current as needed - regardless of the speaker load. These amplifiers ARE what most high current power amplifiers WANT to be. The Ultimate Power Trip !

Amplifier Common Features include: Balanced line input circuitry for noise performance, and ground isolation; High current output unregulated power supply for superb transient response; Regulated front end power supply for smooth midrange and treble response and accuracy; Fan cooling & Flow through chassis design for maximum thermal performance; Gold plated connection terminals for maximum transfer of power.
ADCOM Amplifiers are optimized when used with our Balanced Line Drivers & Crossovers. These devices provide the "Head End" balanced line signal for the amplifiers, canceling noise picked up by the interconnect as it travels to the amplifier. Engine computers, and internal data lines in a car can induce noise that is nearly impossible to eliminate - Unless you are using a Balanced Line device.

Other companies sell balanced line drivers, but they a two piece system, that requires the signal to be converted back to unbalanced before it can be used by the amplifier. ADCOM has built this feature into every one of our power amplifiers, requiring only that you use the Balaced Line Driver at the output from the radio. You then can use our professional XLR cables to run the signal to the amplifier (no matter where it is!)

ADCOM Car Audio Products are currently being used in many company show cars including the KEF car, and the Polk Audio car. ADCOM amplifiers are also winning in competition: John DeJohn, USAC Champion .

ADCOM GFA-4404:

Check out the size of that thing! Size reference pic:

Specs:

ADCOM GFA-4702:

(LOL, That smaller unit is not another amp, its the separate power supply for this beast! Thanks to Nelson Pass, the designer of these beauties, a renowned name in the field of audio engineering, the power section is kept separate from the amplification section to minimize the electrical interference to the fullest, giving out the purest of sounds. No other amp in the world, I repeat, No other amp in the world does that!)

I am sure some of us after seeing the specs will jump in the air with "oh, such huge footprint and puny output, blah blah" LOL. I can just laugh in their faces. :p These are highly under rated CLASS-A amps. Google these up along with Nelson Pass.

Some excerpts from expert reviews for those friends:

REVIEWS:

"4ohms = 40w per ch at <0.1% THD
2ohms = 80w per ch at <0.25% THD
9.75x24.25x2.3 and a solid 19lbs
XLR Balanced inputs

It is a pure class A amplifier. Not A/B, D, T, etc etc etc. Nelson Pass is a legend in class A amplification design. While there are plenty of amplifiers which make more power (this thing is severely underrated), there are very few amplifiers which can match the quality and clarity of these specific Adcom amplifiers. Not to mention they are stable to less than 1/2 ohm. This is also only 1 of 2 amplifiers ever brought to market which was 100% pure mofset circuitry. If you know Nelson Pass than you know this signal path is uncluttered. "

"Adcom Kills The Competition

Pros: Sonically Superior Breaking The Known Sound Barrier Of High Quality Output

Cons: None, Plays Harder and Sharper Than Anything Out There

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

GustavusShaw's Full Review: Adcom GFA 4404 Car Amp
This is one of the most sonically superior amps currently on the market and even the competition thinks so. The GFA-4404 is exquisitely designed all the way down to the circuitry. The internal workings of the amp are beyond extraordinary because of the multitude of features its has respectfully been endowed with.

Ok enough of the hoopla. Let's get down to business this amp is capable of 300w rms split by 2, that's 150wrms for ch 1 and 2 and 150wrms for ch 3 and 4. To keep everything cool and functioning efficiently the amp has a cooling fan. Its impedance handling capability is very low, and allows the user to patch it into a multitude of subwoofers or mids and highs.

It also is able to power a center channel which add to the depth and realism of the music. The balanced line input is one of the clearest in the car audio business. It blocks any noise that is associated with ground loop interference or engine noise.

Amp that are rated at over twice the power can't even come close to touching it at any level of play. The frequency range is far beyond what other amp are able to play, from 0Hz-50KHz. The signal to noise ratio is awsomely high, rated at 100db, which means the sonics come through loud and clear. The damping factor is superb, around 600 which means it blocks a lot of unwanted noise and only plays supernatural music at astounding rate of quality.

I love this amp as well as all other Adcom products. Although a bit high in price its well worth the money!! "

"16 Inch power supply, 24 inch amplifier...70 watts they say?

Pros: power (yes power!)

Cons: size, price

The Bottom Line: Powerful, reliable, and amazing sounding amplifier. Seems to be under guaged in the watt relm. a 70 watt amplifier with a 16 inch power supply and a 24 inch amplifier?

bossman52's Full Review: Adcom GFA 4702 2-Channel Car Amp
Combined with a pair of Cadence Bass Pro 1000's (1000 watts apiece), this amp will have every inch of glass flexing within your automobile...might want to replace it with plexi glass.

I've heard through the grape vine that this amplifier has 2500 watts by theory...and scratched my head in disbelief as I glimpsed back and forth from the 16 inch long power supply and 24 inch long amplifier to the numerous search engine results up saying that it was 70watts x 2. I downloaded the manual from Adcom

and it mentioned that it was 250 watts at 4 ohms mono...still I know this thing could easily power much more than the two 15" Cadences that I had. I had to turn the settings down on the amplifier in fact. The only audible distortion came from the speakers, which claimed to be able to handle 1000 watts."

"A Beautiful And Spellbinding Amp

Pros: Highest Caliber And Quality Money Can Buy

Cons: None,Superior Clarity, Amazing, Beautiful!

GustavusShaw's Full Review: Adcom GFA 4702 2-Channel Car Amp
This amp kicks the competitions but to the events and back home. It looks like something from one of those James Bond flicks. Truly a high tech phenomenon that has to be seen as well as heard. By looks alone this amp looks as if it could power a small city. It has enough capacitors in it to stabilize the power output in such a manner that no fluctuations in the sound is heard whatsoever. The sound reproduction is beyond this world and its signature status proves it.

Although a bit on the high class side this amp offer many the chance to totally blow away the competition at any event if installed and used correctly. Sonically superior to anything that I have had a chance to encounter in all my years of being in the car audio business and industry. It can provide enough power to a bank of subs that is enough to cause an eruption of subsonic proportions. Or it can be used to push a bank of mids and high or component sets with sonic clarity that can't be touch by any thing the competitors have to offer.

The signal to noise ratio is through the roof and the power supply is so solid that it might as well be called amp of steel. IF you can afford this amp no other will be needed it is so versatle it can drive anything with pinpoint accuracy. The amp to get if your seriously thinking about entering the competition arena."

Some comments by Nick Wingate, the guy at ORCA USA, the distributor for high end audio products like Focal , Audison etc...

"I can tell you that sound wise, there was no comparison. The 4 series was way better!!! Those amps were way ahead of their time!! I bought a non-working 4404 with the crossover/linedriver just to get it fixed and have one on hand. I still use it as a reference when I am asked to evaluate new amplifiers for someone. Amazing equipment!!!

"What I listen for when I start comparing amplifiers are a number of things. Power and headroom are certainly a part of the equation, but not all of the equation. Three dimensionality within the sound-stage; depth of soundstage, do the speakers disappear?, timbre, loudness, signal to noise ratio, placement of instruments within the sound-stage, pitch, etc.... Power is not the overall factor when I am evaluation amplifiers. My reference sitting in my house is a 150 watt per channel amplifier made in Europe and that is what I use along with the Adcom. The circuitry and board layout of the Adcom was based on a design by Mr. Nelson Pass. He owns Pass Labs and builds some of the best home audio amps and Pre-amps in the world. Nelson's designs are world renowned!! Go check out his web site!!!
