Petrol Tank Rusted

Petrol Tank Rusted

My Datsun 120Y was having some problems starting on petrol, so I drove it on CNG for many months. There was 10-15 litres petrol in the tank.
When mechanic opened up the carburetor and petrol tank, he found rust in the petrol coming from the tank. He has advised not to drive on petrol as it would again choke the lines/carburetor, and get a new tank.
New tank is not available in Plaza and Water Pump..they saw it doesn't come at all.
Mechanic has given the tank to a denter/painter, who is going to cut it open, clean it, and spray the interior with Hardener. Will this work, and will it be safe?

The fuel gauge mechanism is also badly rusted. Can it be repaired?

Your inputs please...

the tanks will need to be sand/bead blasted inside and out, then cleaned with acid, followed by a real powdercoat (meaning electrostatically bonded dry powder cooked in a high-temp oven), otherwise it'll be a recurring expense..
