Purpose of capacitor?

i have seen that many people have capacitors in their systems? what is their purpose and how are they connected in the system?

capacitors store current which the amp needs in emergency when the bass notes hit.
wihtout it the voltage will drop below 10v and its dangerous for amp.
+ from battery to cap + then to amps + so as minus .hope it clears up. som1 might explain better.
