Standing in first gear ?

hey people ,

i would like to ask our expert why people apply first gear after they turn thier engine off i often seen people makes a habbit to apply first gear after they switch thier engine off bear in mind thier car is not on slope or any thing it just thier habbit to apply first gear after when there car is not running i would like to ask is there any negative or positive or any logic atall in that ? thanks in advance

I heard a incident in muree. A guy with family stopped his corolla diesel on a slope with his wife and kids inside. He pulled handbrake and went for a pee on the road side and car started to roll down the slope and rolled down the mountain.
He ran after the car but couldent stop it. All dead.

I got good hand brake but dun kno why i dun trust it that much and always park in 1st gear :p
