Toyota Aqua HV and Check Engine Light Codes
Toyota Aqua HV and Check Engine Light Codes
Salam everyone!
I hope you’re all doing well. I’m facing an issue with my Toyota Aqua and could use some advice. While driving on the highway, several warning lights suddenly appeared on the dashboard, including the check engine light, slip warning light, EBD light, and Hybrid System Abnormal light.
I pulled over and had a local electrician inspect the car. He connected an OBD scanner and found the error code P0A80 Replace Hybrid Battery Pack. Considering the car has just over 112,000 km on the odometer, I decided to clear the code and continue driving. For the rest of the day, no lights reappeared.
However, the next day, while driving on the highway again, the same lights turned on. I revisited the electrician, who cleared the code again at my request but reiterated that the hybrid battery needs to be replaced, and there’s no other solution.
Seeking a second opinion, I consulted another electrician, who suggested cleaning a motor located under the back seat. This led me to do some research online, where I learned that in some rare cases, a malfunctioning o r dirty cooling fan could cause this error code due to battery overheating. Upon inspection, I found the fan to be clean and functioning properly.
I’m now stuck and unsure of the next steps. Any advice o r insights would be greatly appreciated! 😊

In many cases, the terminals of the cells in the battery pack become corroded, which disrupts proper current flow and triggers the Replace Battery Pack warning. Fortunately, this issue can often be resolved without replacing the battery pack entirely.
These batteries are equipped with a kill switch, and once that is removed, it’s completely safe to work on them. You can easily remove the battery pack yourself, open it up, and clean the corroded terminals. Soaking the terminals in vinegar effectively removes the corrosion. If the battery cells themselves are still in good condition, this cleaning process can extend the batterys life by another 20,000 km o r more.
This is a straightforward process you can do at home, saving you the high costs mechanics often charge for this service. In fact, their fees might make you feel like replacing the entire battery pack would have been a better option!
For guidance, you can refer to the numerous tutorials available on YouTube for the Prius and Prius C the Aqua is marketed as the Prius C in the U.S.. With a bit of effort, you can restore your battery and save a significant amount of money.
If you’re located in Islamabad o r Rawalpindi, I’d be happy to assist you in person if needed.

Thank you so much, brother! I really appreciate your help. By the way, I’m in Lahore. While researching, I’ve come across similar information to what you mentioned. However, I have a few questions:
Do we need any specific tools for opening the battery pack, o r will a standard toolbox suffice? I already have a complete set of tools, but I want to be sure before starting.
Also, is it normal to have to replace the hybrid battery pack at this mileage? I bought the car from a showroom with a genuine mileage of about 105,000 km, and I’ve driven it for another 8,000 km since then.
Looking forward to your advice!
