Transmission installation in a VW beetle
Transmission installation in a VW beetle
The transmission is currently installed in my 1960 beetle is less than perfect and crying like crazy on the highway. The gears crunched between the switch and throw those groaning noises when the clutch was depressed. Luckily I found this gent in Michigan U.S. was rebuilding transmissions for life for 40 years before retiring and now works from home. He has a cache of NOS parts to build a transmission from scratch. The best part is that he builds a transmission according to the customers .. specs from mild to wild. I do not drive crazy but I still opted for a new 3.88 ring and pinion, new pinion bearings, new syncro rings, welded and polished the third and fourth gears, new axles and axle tubes with new bearings and a new throw out below. All parts listed above are new old stock original VW parts in Germany as the Good Lord wanted them to be, all equipped with a new model of the transmission case swing axle IRS later commuted.
I am including pictures here, but warn you to refrain from drooling on the keyboard please.I realize the pure p * rn for those looking for half decent transfer to install in their VW's.
I spent the transmission when it was done, but the local VW mechanic wants $ 600 plus tax to install in the car! Now I have seen it all done and there are many videos on Youtube, but still gives me the chills when I think ahead on the track. But I'm not going to pay anyone $ 600 plus 13% tax (which is also a ball park figure about the data. .. H would take the final figure could well be a lot higher)
I have the car in the garage and started removing the wires. Although there is not a lot of them but I'm no risks and have found them to remember their location when its time to get everything put back together. (Hopefully in a few weeks time.) I will take pictures whenever possible and share with you the progress in the days / weeks in advance.
Please Wish me luck. I have a feeling that I need much.
