What role does the 12V battery play in Prius alternator-like failures?

The Prius has both a hybrid battery and a 12V auxiliary battery. If the 12V battery is weak, how does it affect the Prius electrical system? Can a weak 12V battery give false signs of alternator failure?

The 12V auxiliary battery in a Prius powers smaller electrical components like the lights, air conditioning, and ECU. If this battery is weak o r failing, it can give false signs of alternator failure. This may happen if:

The DC-DC converter is not charging the 12V battery properly.
The 12V battery itself is old and not holding a charge.

Symptoms of a weak 12V battery:

Electrical components fail to operate o r work intermittently.
Difficulty starting the vehicle.
Warning lights for the 12V battery o r hybrid system on the dashboard.
