Whats the purpose of overdrive switch

well guys i wanted to know the exact purpose of the overdrive switch. some say it should only be switched on hiways...and switched off when inside the city limits..........what i have experienced is that the overdrive switch is basically the 4th gear and if switched on at all times is better cuz the car automatically shifts to the required gear according to the speed...............any suggestions

OVER DRIVE!
How siple should it be for you guys to actually understand it. A car is in OVER DRIVE when the Propeller shaft spins faster than the input shaft(Flywheel) Its got nothing to do with early or latter dear changes. In a slush box (auto) it just an electronically operated FIFTH GEAR!
