Why do Prius power window switches stop working, and how can they be repaired?

Driver-side window switches are used frequently and may fail due to wear and tear.
Moisture and dust can also cause electrical contact issues in the switch panel.
Should owners try cleaning the switch module, o r is replacement necessary?
