Why is my Alto Lapin making a strange whining o r grinding noise from the engine?

My Alto Lapin is making a whining o r grinding noise from the engine, especially when the engine is running at higher speeds. Could this be a sign of a faulty water pump, and how can I tell if the noise is coming from the water pump?
