Hyundai Azera Overview

The Hyundai Azera, produced between 2005 and 2011, marked Hyundai’s serious step into the premium sedan category. Replacing the XG350, the Azera was a full-size sedan that provided buyers with an affordable alternative to more expensive luxury models. With its quiet cabin, powerful V6 engines, and smooth ride quality, the Azera offered both comfort and performance. It came in two primary variants: the more budget-friendly GLS and the more feature-rich Limited, each tailored to different customer preferences while maintaining the essence of a refined driving experience.

Exterior
The exterior of the Hyundai Azera during these years reflected a conservative yet elegant design philosophy. With smooth lines and a wide stance, the car had a premium appearance. The front fascia included a chrome-accented grille and wraparound headlights, giving it a dignified look. Both variants looked similar from a distance, but the Limited trim had more upscale touches like 17-inch alloy wheels, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlights, and a standard sunroof. In contrast, the GLS came with smaller alloy wheels and more basic headlight options. The rear design was simple, featuring large tail lamps and subtle chrome accents that added a hint of sophistication.

Interior
Inside the cabin, the Hyundai Azera delivered an unexpectedly luxurious feel for its class, especially when compared to its competitors. The GLS trim included cloth upholstery, manual climate control, and a basic stereo system, making it a comfortable but practical option. On the other hand, the Limited variant elevated the interior experience with high-quality leather seats, wood-grain trim accents, dual-zone automatic climate control, and heated front seats. It also offered a premium Infinity sound system and, in later models, optional navigation and Bluetooth. Both trims provided generous legroom, especially in the rear seats, making the Azera an excellent choice for long-distance comfort and family use.

Safety
Hyundai placed a strong emphasis on safety in the Azera lineup. Standard safety equipment across both GLS and Limited trims included dual front airbags, side-impact airbags, side curtain airbags, active head restraints, anti-lock brakes (ABS), and electronic stability control. The Limited trim often featured additional safety technologies like rear parking sensors, particularly in later model years. With solid crash test ratings for the time, the Azera was a reassuring choice for safety-conscious buyers, helping to enhance Hyundai’s reputation in global markets.

Competitors
During its production span, the Hyundai Azera faced stiff competition from several full-size and near-luxury sedans. Key rivals included the Toyota Avalon, Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima, Chevrolet Impala, and Ford Taurus. While these models came from brands with longer histories in the segment, the Azera held its own by offering a more affordable price, a longer warranty, and comparable—if not superior—comfort features. The value proposition and overall refinement of the Azera made it a strong alternative to these more established nameplates.

Mileage
Fuel economy was adequate for a full-size sedan powered by V6 engines. The GLS, equipped with a 3.3-liter V6 engine, typically delivered around 17 to 18 miles per gallon in the city and 26 to 27 miles per gallon on the highway. The Limited, powered by a more robust 3.8-liter V6, offered slightly lower figures, averaging about 17 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway. These numbers were on par with many competitors of the time, although fuel economy was not the Azera’s strongest selling point compared to newer, more efficient models.
