19-Month Old Proton X70 Booking Still Pending for Customer

Al-Haj Automotive, the exclusive distributor of Proton cars in Pakistan, is facing significant backlash from its customers due to extensive delays in vehicle deliveries.

An anonymous customer has taken the matter up with the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Industries and Production (MoIP), alleging that the company is involved in a potential fraudulent scheme.

According to the customer, he initially booked a Proton X70 for Rs. 4.97 million on January 10, 2022, with a projected delivery date set for September 2022. However, September came and went without any communication from the dealership regarding the delay. On October 7, 2022, he received a letter from the dealership, informing him that the vehicle would be delivered within 30 days but at an escalated price of Rs. 7.17 million—an increase of Rs. 2.2 million.

Despite the delayed delivery and unexpected price surge, the customer made a full payment by December 2022, receiving a "zero balance" receipt indicating no outstanding amount. However, no vehicle has been delivered since.

In correspondence from the company, it was explained that import restrictions had led to difficulties in procuring vehicle assembly kits, with a tentative delivery date promised for May 2023. As of now, a year and 7 months since the original booking, no resolution has been offered, affecting not only this customer but others as well.

The customer's letter asserts that Al-Haj Automotive's practices lack transparency and suggest a possible Ponzi scheme, putting customers' investments at risk. The customer has formally requested the MoIP to initiate a thorough investigation and legal action against the company, urging the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to scrutinize the situation and hold both the owners and dealers accountable for the distress experienced by customers.

Additionally, the customer has taken legal action against Proton's official dealership, claiming that the dealership is unresponsive to customers who have booked vehicles. Allegations also include multiple cases of bounced refund cheques issued by the dealership.
