2nd Gen BAIC BJ40 Official Images Revealed

BAIC Motors, a subsidiary of the Chinese state-owned BAIC Group, emerged in 2010 as a prominent player in the automotive landscape. Known as Beijing Motors or BAIC Motors, the company boasts a diverse portfolio spanning sedans, crossovers, and SUVs. The iconic "BJ" abbreviation, derived from BeiJing, signifies the brand's focus on robust Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), exemplified by the BAIC BJ40 Plus.

BAIC's Presence in Pakistan
For those in Pakistan, the names BAIC and BJ are familiar due to Sazgar Engineering's exclusive assembly rights for BAIC models. Sazgar Engineering is also responsible for producing Haval (Great Wall Motors) crossovers in Pakistan. Interestingly, while BAIC and Great Wall Motors compete in their home market of China, Sazgar Engineering introduced the locally assembled BAIC BJ40, distinct from the iconic Toyota BJ40 series, in October 2021.

A Look at the Evolution of BJ40
The journey of the BJ40 commenced in 2013 with the first generation's production. Over time, a range of variants and configurations, including the 2-door and 4-door BJ40L, was introduced. A 2019 facelift transformed the BJ40L into the BJ40 Plus. This rugged SUV gained traction not only in China and Pakistan but also in select markets across the Middle East, Africa, and Europe.

Anticipating the 2nd Generation BAIC BJ40
While the first-generation BJ40 enjoyed popularity among off-road enthusiasts, evolving market dynamics prompted BAIC to craft a new chapter for the iconic SUV. The unveiling of official images of the 2nd generation BJ40 marks a departure from its predecessor. While technical details and features are pending, the images reflect a fresh direction for the model.

Exterior Transformation
The design overhaul is evident in the 2nd generation's exterior. Departing from the previous model's resemblance to the Jeep Wrangler, the new BJ40 exhibits a rectangular front end with a horizontal shut line above the upright grille. A slim, segmented front grille hosts dual LED headlight modules, complemented by integrated LED fog lights and a skid plate on the rectangular front bumper. Wheel arches, plastic cladding, and larger side-view mirrors enhance its off-road aesthetic.

Interior Innovation
The interior redesign is equally striking. Departing from Jeep Wrangler influences, the interior now draws inspiration from Mercedes Benz. The dashboard features an aluminum-type trim and a horizontal, flat, rectangular design. The cockpit boasts a fully digital display and a new steering wheel reminiscent of the Mercedes G-Wagon. The standout feature is a panoramic floating infotainment screen extending to the passenger side, while large grab handles and AC vents maintain the off-roading theme.

Mechanical Advancements
The 2nd generation BJ40 retains its body-on-frame chassis, but with anticipated improvements in stiffness and torsional rigidity. Front suspension consists of a double wishbone coil spring setup, while the rear adopts a multilink (5 links) independent coil spring configuration. The new model features a 2.0L turbocharged petrol engine generating 241HP and 385NM of torque, promising enhanced power and efficiency compared to its predecessor.

Off-Road Prowess
Designed for off-road endeavors, the new BJ40 offers a 4WD setup with a differential lock. Driver-selectable terrain modes and a rotary dial for mode adjustments enhance its adaptability. The model is equipped with an 8-speed automatic transmission, ABS, EPB, tire pressure monitoring, hill start and descent control, and a towing capacity of approximately 2.5 tons.

Anticipated Launch and Future Outlook
The official launch of the 2nd generation BJ40 is scheduled for August 25th in China. The impending release prompts speculation about its arrival in Pakistan. However, the current locally assembled model, introduced just two years ago, is expected to continue for a while due to market considerations, investments, and economic challenges. The future, marked by recovery and industry normalization, holds the promise of introducing the new generation to Pakistani roads.
