Amidst soaring fuel prices in Pakistan, the newly formed government is intensifying efforts to transition two and three-wheelers towards electrification. Recently, the Engineering Development Board (EDB) issued licenses to 34 manufacturers of such vehicles under the Electric Vehicles Policy for 2020-2025, marking a significant departure from conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
During a webinar held at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute, Asim Ayaz, a senior EDB official, highlighted the financing challenge for customers due to the higher costs associated with electric vehicles, primarily stemming from battery expenses. To alleviate this concern, the ministry proposed the installation of EV charging stations at every petrol station across the country.
Ahmed Sajeel from Deewan Motors BMW underscored the shifting stance of Japanese car manufacturers towards electric vehicles in response to the global trend. He stressed the importance of developing infrastructure alongside electric vehicles, advocating for local manufacturing, leveraging Pakistan's abundant raw materials like silica.
This transition towards electric vehicles represents a significant stride in addressing the twin challenges of escalating fuel prices and carbon emissions. However, ensuring affordability and establishing robust charging infrastructure are pivotal aspects of facilitating this transition.
