All-New Nissan Leaf EV Set for Next Year

In anticipation of the rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) landscape, Nissan is gearing up to unveil the all-new Nissan Leaf next year. This compact EV is undergoing a comprehensive redesign to not only rejuvenate its image but also to face the challenges posed by contemporary competitors in the electric vehicle market.

Initially discontinued due to sluggish sales, the Nissan Leaf EV is making a comeback with a fresh design and an electrified powertrain. Nissan's commitment to an electric future is evident in its plans to invest £3 billion ($3.8 bn) in building three new EVs at its Sunderland, UK factory by 2024. Among these, the revamped Nissan Leaf will take center stage as the first to roll off the production line, showcasing the company's dedication to sustainable mobility.

Transforming from its original hatchback form, the next-generation Leaf will embrace the identity of a crossover SUV, aligning itself with current trends in the EV market. The Chill-Out concept provides a glimpse into the future Leaf's design, featuring the CMF-EV platform and Nissan’s e-4ORCE electric 4WD control system.

A significant upgrade comes in the form of advanced batteries (Gen5) from Nissan’s new cell plant, promising 30% more energy density than the current Leaf’s 62 kWh pack. This enhancement translates into an impressive range of up to 385 km, addressing a key concern that hindered the appeal of the earlier Leaf models.

While the original Nissan Leaf made history as the world’s first mass-produced battery electric vehicle in 2010, subsequent versions struggled to keep pace with the growing demand for EVs. Hindered by a limited range and lackluster driving dynamics, the 2022 Leaf aims to bridge the gap with improved specifications. However, the EV market's landscape has changed, with rivals like BYD and SAIC’s MG making significant strides, leaving Nissan with the challenge of regaining its standing in a rapidly evolving industry.
