BMW Stops ICE Production in German Plant

BMW is bidding farewell to an era in Germany as the last internal combustion engine (ICE) exits its Munich production line, symbolizing a significant shift in the company's automotive landscape.

BMW's historic Munich factory, known for over six decades for the production of combustion engines, is undergoing a transformation into a hub for electric vehicles. Since October 2021, the plant has been assembling the electric i4, and it is set to produce future EVs, including the electric 3-Series (i3), i3 Touring, and a new iteration of the i4, as part of BMW's Neue Klasse of EVs.

However, BMW's departure from ICE production in Germany doesn't mark the end of their relationship with combustion engines. The production of these engines will shift to the UK and Austria, reflecting BMW's belief in the coexistence of electric and combustion engines beyond the widely set 2030 deadline.

Beyond the geographical shift in production, this move also signifies a transition for BMW's workforce at the Munich plant. The 1,200 employees are slated for retraining, redeployment, and new roles, demonstrating BMW's commitment to adapting its workforce alongside its strategic direction.

While Munich focuses on EVs, BMW's other factories contribute to the brand's electric vehicle lineup. The iX, i5, and i7 are manufactured in Dingolfing, and the iX1 and iX2 electric SUVs are assembled in Regensburg. BMW's extensive investment in e-mobility includes new battery assembly and testing facilities, highlighting the company's dedication to advancing electric vehicle technology.

Striving for a balanced approach, BMW aims for 50% of its sales to be ICE vehicles by 2030. This pragmatic stance reflects BMW's belief in the coexistence of both electric and combustion engine technologies, acknowledging diverse global markets and consumer preferences.
