Breaking News: Continental Reveals Face ID Tech
At CES 2024, Continental introduces the "Face Authentication Display," featuring a two-stage access control system based on biometric user recognition. The system utilizes specialized external camera systems mounted on the vehicle's B-pillar and discreetly positioned behind the driver display console.
Through biometric face authentication, the vehicle opens and starts upon detecting a registered user, with trinamiX's liveness detection ensuring reliable deception detection. To maintain the vehicle's interior design, Continental places the necessary camera technology behind the driver display console, enabling a frameless screen surface—an evolution of the award-winning 2023 CES Innovation Award technology.

An interior camera with biometric authentication verifies the authorized driver, facilitating additional features like a payment function. The high-contrast OLED display adapts for optical components to detect people through activated pixels, incorporating sensors for reliable attention and fatigue detection.
Dr. Boris Mergell, head of User Experience (UX) at Continental Automotive, emphasizes the importance of user experience, combining functionality, technical aspects, and aesthetic appeal seamlessly.
Continental integrates advanced facial authentication technology into the vehicle's B-pillar, allowing keyless entry. This trinamiX system provides secure authentication based on visual matching and real skin recognition, enhancing security against theft and enabling controlled access for family members.

An innovative concept introduces an exterior display integrated into the B-pillar, visible only when in use. This display facilitates interaction with the vehicle, displaying information like the electric car's charging progress. The "In2Visible" technology, initially developed for vehicle interiors, extends to exteriors.
Continental's "Face Authentication Display" relies on trinamiX's highly secure biometric facial recognition, distinguishing real skin from other materials. This technology ensures the highest security standards, preventing unauthorized access using masks, AI-generated images, or similar methods.
Wilfried Hermes, director of Consumer Electronics at trinamiX, highlights the collaboration's improvement in driver-monitoring systems, enhancing interaction between the driver and the vehicle while enabling exclusive display designs behind the OLED panel.
