BYD Introduces Seal EV in Australia

BYD has officially launched its new Seal EV in the Australian market, posing a significant challenge to the well-established Tesla Model 3 by offering a remarkable $12,000 AUD price advantage.

BYD Seal Trim Levels and Pricing
The BYD Seal EV is available in three different trim levels, each catering to various preferences and budgets. The lineup includes the Seal Dynamic Standard Range RWD, starting at an enticing $49,888 AUD, the Seal Premium Extended Range RWD at $58,798 AUD, and the Seal Performance AWD, which comes in at $68,798 AUD. In comparison, the updated Tesla Model 3 starts at $61,900 AUD for the base model and $71,900 AUD for the Long-Range variant.

BYD Seal Specifications
The BYD Seal is equipped with a 61.44 kWh battery pack powering a rear electric motor, generating 150 kW (201 hp) of power and 310 Nm of torque. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.5 seconds and offers a substantial range of 460 km on a full charge. Surprisingly, despite its competitive pricing, the base model is generously equipped with features such as 18-inch wheels, a 15.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display, a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, synthetic leather seats, a 12-speaker Dynaudio sound system, wireless phone charging, rear-privacy glass, and a range of passive and active safety features.

BYD Seal Premium Extended Range RWD
The Seal Premium Extended Range RWD version boasts a larger 82.56 kWh battery and a rear-mounted electric motor with 230 kW (308 hp) and 360 Nm of torque. This variant can reach 100 km/h from a standstill in just 5.9 seconds and offers an extended range of 570 km on a full charge. Additionally, it includes larger brake calipers and discs, 19-inch wheels, a head-up display, genuine leather seats and steering wheel, a 4-way power adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar support, and memory functions for the driver’s seat and side mirrors.

Seal Performance AWD
The BYD Seal Performance AWD features a dual-motor 4WD setup. It has the same 82.56 kWh battery at the rear, coupled with a 230 kW (308 hp) motor, and an additional 160 kW (215 hp) motor at the front, delivering a combined power output of 390 kW (523 hp) and 670 Nm of torque. This high-performance variant can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 3.8 seconds and provides a driving range of 520 km. It also incorporates advanced features such as BYD’s frequency-selective dampers, torque vectoring, an electronic child lock, and a heated steering wheel.

Charging Capabilities and Safety Features
The base BYD Seal supports 110 kW DC fast charging, while the Premium and Performance versions offer 150 kW charging, enabling the battery to charge from 30% to 80% in just 26 minutes. All three versions come with adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, front and rear cross-traffic alert with braking, door exit warning, traffic sign recognition, and a 360-degree camera.

BYD's Expanding Presence
BYD's expanding export lineup, which includes models like the Atto 3 crossover, Dolphin hatchback, and Seal sedan, has been well-received in various international markets. The company has introduced premium models like the Tang and Han in key markets, but the Seal, Atto 3, and Dolphin are gaining traction due to their affordability, feature-rich offerings, and impressive driving ranges. These vehicles are already making a significant impact in countries such as Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand, India, Brazil, Mexico, and are poised to disrupt the Japanese market in the near future.
