Chery Launches Omoda E5 EV in Malaysia
Malaysia welcomes the formal launch of the Chery Omoda E5, marking a significant milestone in the country's electric vehicle (EV) market. This EV, essentially an electric version of the Omoda 5 SUV already available in Malaysia, presents a few cosmetic distinctions. Priced at RM146,800, the initial batch of E5 units arrives as Completely Built-Up (CBU) imports from China. However, local manufacturing is slated to commence in Q2 2024, positioning the Omoda E5 as Malaysia's first Chinese Completely Knocked Down Electric Vehicle.
Omoda E5 in Malaysia comes in one variant, powered by a 150 kW electric motor. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.6 seconds with a top speed of 172 km/h. Its 61 kWh battery offers a range of 430 kilometers. Charging options include a 9.9kW AC charger and an 80kW DC fast charger, with a 28-minute charge time from 30% to 80% capacity. Additionally, it features a vehicle-to-load (V2L) function, capable of supplying up to 3.3 kW for external devices.
Enhancing the driving experience, the Omoda E5 incorporates one-pedal driving support, a creep function, and a 'pocket brake,' triggering emergency braking when the 'Park' button is pressed while driving. The vehicle has undergone rigorous testing, including a 'water wading test' and a 'bottom scrapping test,' ensuring its durability.

Feature-wise, the Omoda E5 offers a plethora of amenities, including LED projector headlamps, 18-inch alloy wheels, a powered sunroof, a powered tailgate, and dynamic ambient lighting. Inside, occupants are treated to monotone or dual-tone leather upholstery, ventilated front seats, and advanced connectivity features such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. On the safety front, Chery equips the E5 with an advanced driver assistance system (ADAS 2.5), comprising a 360-degree camera, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and prevention, among others.
Customers can enjoy a standard vehicle warranty of 7 years or 150,000 km, along with a separate 8-year or 160,000 km battery and drive unit warranty. Notably, Chery offers a '1-to-1' replacement for EV batteries if their state of health falls below 70% during the warranty period. While Chery explores the feasibility of introducing the Omoda and Jaecoo sub-brands in Pakistan, production at its Ghandhara facility remains suspended, casting uncertainty over the company's future plans in the region.
