Chery QQ Makes a Stylish Comeback at Shanghai Auto Show
Chery is breathing new life into its long-retired QQ hatchback, announcing a futuristic concept model that will be showcased at the upcoming Shanghai Auto Show. After a decade-long absence, the beloved compact vehicle is back — this time with a thoroughly modernized look and advanced features.
A Glimpse into QQ’s Past Success
First introduced in 2003, the Chery QQ series was marketed as a perfect entry-level vehicle for younger drivers. The lineup began with the QQ3, later expanding to include the QQ6 and the uniquely styled QQme. The first-generation models quickly gained traction, with yearly sales crossing the 40,000 mark and monthly numbers exceeding 10,000 units by 2005. In total, the series sold more than 1.4 million units, starting at just 29,900 yuan (roughly 4,100 USD). However, lackluster performance from newer models led to its retirement in 2014.
The New QQ: A Vision of the Future
Fast-forward over 20 years, and Chery is introducing a completely revamped New Chery QQ 2025 Concept that embraces sleekness and innovation. The new model showcases a dual-tone black and white exterior, curvy body lines, and a bold, closed-off front grille adorned with a redesigned “Qq” emblem. Its futuristic aesthetic is elevated by features like digital side mirrors, flush-fit doors with no handles, and geometric-shaped LED headlights.
Exterior Styling: Bold, Minimalist, and Smart
The car’s side profile is defined by unique “+” shaped alloy wheels that match the vehicle’s black-white contrast. Additional design elements include the Qq logo placed behind the C-pillar and a subtle Chery Design inscription along the lower skirt. At the rear, the styling is symmetrically aligned with the front end and features a high-mounted brake light, enhancing visibility and modern appeal.
Market Trends: Is the QQ Making a Strategic Comeback?
In the years since the QQ’s discontinuation, the popularity of compact electric vehicles (mini EVs) in China has skyrocketed due to affordability and urban convenience. With models like the Wuling Hongguang Mini Electric Vehicle from SGMW and Geely’s Xingyuan gaining traction, Chery’s decision to revive the QQ could be a well-timed move to recapture the market’s attention.
