Romanian automaker Dacia has revealed its all-new third-generation Duster SUV, marking a significant step forward by offering mild-hybrid and full-hybrid powertrains, along with a bi-fuel option. Following Renault's acquisition of Dacia in 1999, Dacia became the third brand under the Renault group, rebranding models like the Sandero, Logan, and Duster in various markets, including India.
The 2024 Dacia Duster, a hallmark model for the Romanian manufacturer, builds upon the features that initially brought it to prominence. The sub-compact SUV presents a more robust appearance than its predecessor, incorporating durable and sustainable materials, a more spacious cabin, and the introduction of electrified powertrains, compensating for the absence of diesel. Despite substantial improvements, Dacia emphasizes that the Duster remains a "bargain," promising the lowest price in its class.
Built on the CMF-B architecture, the B-segment SUV boasts dimensions of 4,340 mm in length, 1,810 mm in width, and 1,660 mm in height, making it considerably larger than its predecessor. With a sculpted body featuring plastic cladding made of a new material called Starkle, the Duster showcases Dacia's latest design language, highlighted by Y-shaped LEDs in its modernized lighting units.

Internally, the redesigned Duster sports a digital cockpit with a 7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 10.1-inch infotainment display, standard in all trims except the entry-level 'Essential.' Noteworthy additions include the Dacia YouClip accessory system with up to five grips for holding smartphones, tablets, storage pouches, cupholders, and more.
Dacia claims the new Duster is more practical, offering 30 mm of extra rear legroom, increased front interior width, and a wider boot opening with a lower floor. The 472-liter capacity represents a 6% increase compared to the previous Duster. Accessories within Dacia's InNature collection include the camping-friendly Sleep Pack, featuring a fold-out double bed, tray table, and storage space inside a removable 3-1 box.
In terms of engines, the entry-level Duster features a turbocharged 1.0L TCe 100 Bi-Fuel unit that runs on both gasoline and LPG. The Duster TCe 130 comes with a turbocharged 1.2L three-cylinder gasoline engine with a 48 V mild-hybrid motor, while the most powerful version is the Hybrid 140 with a self-charging hybrid system.
The Duster offers an optional 4x4 version with selectable driving modes and class-leading ground clearance of 217 mm. In terms of equipment, the entry-level 'Essential' variant includes fixed roof bars, airbags, and rear parking sensors, while higher trims add features such as digital cockpits, alloy wheels, reversing cameras, and advanced infotainment systems.
Although Dacia has traditionally prioritized cost-cutting over advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), the new Duster now incorporates several safety features, including automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, and recognition of traffic signs.
While pricing details are pending, Denis Le Vot, CEO of Dacia, has stated that the latest generation Dusters will be priced below €20,000 ($22,000) across Europe. The SUV will be produced in Romania's Pitesti facility, with around 1,000 Dusters manufactured daily, totaling 2.2 million units produced since the debut of the first generation in 2010.
The Duster was once anticipated to enter the Pakistani market when Renault announced its entry in 2017. However, despite acquiring land and pledging an initial investment, volatile economic conditions led to the company abandoning its plans, and negotiations with the government were unsuccessful in convincing Renault to continue its investment.
