Exclusive Move: Next-Gen Chevrolet Bolt Confirmed as EUV
General Motors has officially declared that the next-generation Chevrolet Bolt, slated for a 2025 launch, will exclusively come in the larger Bolt EUV variant. This decision follows the impressive sales performance of the Bolt lineup, making it General Motors' most popular electric vehicle, despite its aging model. The move to streamline offerings in the electric vehicle (EV) sector could have broad implications for GM.
GM's announcement, communicated through InsideEVs, underscored the Bolt EUV's resounding success compared to its smaller counterpart, the Bolt EV. Although precise sales figures were not disclosed, it is widely believed that the Bolt EUV significantly outperforms the Bolt EV, roughly at a two-to-one ratio. In the first nine months of the current year alone, Chevrolet achieved a remarkable combined total of 49,494 Bolt unit sales, reflecting an astonishing 125% increase from the same period in 2022.

The Bolt's rise in popularity is credited in part to its competitive pricing, further reduced by electric tax credits from the Inflation Reduction Act. These credits, combined with federal and state incentives, along with dealer discounts, brought the Bolt's price to approximately €19,000 for an EV with an impressive range of 417 km or 398 km, depending on the model size.
Despite its sales success, the Bolt has begun to show signs of aging, having debuted in 2016. The smaller Bolt EV, introduced in 2016, was later joined by the Bolt EUV in 2022. Its 55 kW DC fast charging capability falls short compared to more modern EVs, resulting in a slower option for adding range. Additionally, the older battery setup faced profitability issues, leading to a temporary cancellation decision earlier this year.

GM, however, reversed course, motivated by the Bolt's popularity and potential profitability with the adoption of Ultium batteries and architecture, featured in other new EVs in GM's lineup. The upcoming generation Bolt will not undergo a complete redesign but will receive updates, including lower-cost LFP batteries, faster charging, advanced safety features, and other significant enhancements. Crucially, GM intends to maintain a pricing level similar to the current model, addressing a significant barrier to broader EV adoption.
The decision to exclusively offer the Bolt EUV in the next generation strategically aligns with the crossover-focused American market. GM's adherence to this body style reflects the continued success of the Bolt. If GM delivers on the promise of affordability, the Bolt is poised to remain GM’s best-selling EV for the foreseeable future.
