First 30 Electric Buses Arrive in Islamabad
Islamabad’s Urban Transport Project has taken a significant step forward with the arrival of the first batch of 30 electric buses from China. These buses, after clearing customs in Karachi, will be transported to Islamabad on trailers. They are expected to reach Islamabad by the end of next week, marking a crucial milestone in the city's efforts to modernize its public transportation system.
CDA Chairman Chaudhry Muhammad Ali Randhawa has mandated that senior citizens and students benefit from subsidies under the urban transport project. This directive aims to make the new electric bus service more accessible and affordable for these groups. The initiative reflects the CDA's commitment to inclusive urban mobility solutions.
A pivotal meeting took place at the CDA headquarters, chaired by Randhawa and attended by senior officials from the CDA Transport Wing, including the Member Engineering. During this meeting, Randhawa requested a detailed timeline for the construction of bus depots and the rapid establishment of charging points for the electric buses. This demonstrates the CDA's urgency in operationalizing the new fleet.
CDA officials briefed Randhawa on the imminent arrival of the remaining 70 buses. They also reported that tenders for the construction of bus depots at I-9, Tramari Chowk, and Zero Point have been issued, with the lowest bid set to be awarded soon. This ensures that the necessary infrastructure will be in place to support the new electric buses.
Randhawa directed a comparative review with the Punjab Metro Bus Authority model and suggested extending the route to the Diplomatic Enclave. He emphasized the importance of the Islamabad bus service as an exemplary project and warned that any delays beyond the set timeline would be unacceptable. This underscores the high standards and expectations set for the project's timely completion.
