Government Increases Traffic Violation Fines upto 200%

In a significant move, the government of Pakistan has decided to raise fines for traffic rule violations 2023 on national highways and motorways by up to 200 percent. These adjustments aim to promote safer driving practices and enhance road discipline.

Speeding Fines Raised

One of the notable changes includes a substantial increase in fines for overspeeding on motorways and highways. The fine for exceeding the speed limit has been set at Rs. 2,000. The maximum speed limits on these roads are 120 km/h for light vehicles and 110 km/h for heavy vehicles.

Motorcyclists, car drivers, and drivers of light transport vehicles (LTV) who are caught driving without a valid license will now face a fine of Rs. 5,000. For drivers of heavy transport vehicles (HTV) and public service vehicles (PSV) without a license, the penalty has been increased to Rs. 10,000.

Lane Violation Fines and Wrong Overtaking and HID Lights Fines

In an effort to discourage lane violations, fines have been raised for those who do not adhere to lane discipline. Motorcyclists, car drivers, and LTV drivers will be fined Rs. 1,000 for lane violations, while HTV and PSV drivers will incur a steeper fine of Rs. 5,000.

The police will now impose a fine of Rs. 300 for wrong overtaking, encouraging safer overtaking practices. Additionally, the fine for using High-Intensity Discharge (HID) lights has been set at Rs. 2,000, discouraging the use of blinding headlights on the road.

Toll Tax Rate Adjustments on Lahore-Islamabad Motorway

In a separate development, the National Highway Authority (NHA) raised toll tax rates on the Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2) in August. These new rates, which took effect on August 26 and will remain applicable for the next 12 months, signify a financial adjustment for travelers using this major route. The revised toll rates include an increase of Rs. 3.7 per kilometer for car tolls, bringing the total to Rs. 1,100. Similarly, wagon tolls have been raised to Rs. 1,840. These adjustments aim to support infrastructure maintenance and development efforts on this vital roadway.
