Govt To Ban Cars Without Airbags Under WP.29 Regulations

The Federal Cabinet has officially approved the Automotive Industry Development and Export Plan AIDP 2021-26. Now, the government is gearing up to ensure the implementation of New Auto Policy and gradually announcing to practice the essential initiatives strengthen the local auto sector.

The biggest breaking news in this regard is that the government is now going to implement the WP.29 regulations for all vehicles whether they are imported or locally manufactured. According to WP.29, the vehicles which are not fulfilling the requirements will not be allowed for sale in the market after 30th June 2021.

What Are WP.29 Regulations?

Now, you are thinking that what are WP.29 Regulations? Yes, the UNECE World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations WP.29 is a global forum established to monitor the vehicles and vehicles equipment around the world. 64 countries in the world are following WP.29.

WP.29 Regulations in Pakistan

The government of Pakistan agreed to follow the UN Vehicle Regulations since April 2020. But many companies are not still following these rules. In AIDP 2021-26 recently, the government announced that the auto companies will have to follow the UN Vehicle Regulations. Under WP.29 Regulations the car makers must ensure the quality of vehicle steering, tires, brakes, lights, seatbelts, seats and headrests, airbags, rearview mirrors, anti-theft, and other safety features.

The major development in this regard is that the car in Pakistan without airbags will be completely banned. The government has announced a deadline till 30th June 2022. So let’s see which vehicles will not be allowed in the Pakistani road.

In the whole scenario, the Suzuki Cars in Pakistan will be affected by this decision because most Suzuki cars come without airbags in Pakistan.
