Heavy Fines in Punjab for Smoke-Emitting Vehicles

Heavy Fines in Punjab for Smoke-Emitting Vehicles
The Punjab government has introduced new measures to combat the growing problem of smog across the province. In response to court orders, the government has imposed significant heavy fines in Punjab for smoke-emitting vehicles, aiming to reduce pollution levels. The Punjab Transport and Masstransit Department has instructed Deputy Commissioners to implement strict actions to curb this issue. Public transport has already faced such fines, and now, private cars are also being targeted. Car owners have been given a seven-day period to fix their vehicles’ smoke emissions, or they will face penalties.
Reporting Smoke-Emitting Vehicles
To aid enforcement, the government is encouraging the public to report smoke-emitting vehicles by calling 15 and using extension number 6. This reporting system aims to help authorities identify and act on faulty vehicles more effectively. Additionally, there is a complete ban on smoke-emitting buses, rickshaws, and trucks within Lahore. This measure is intended to minimize the presence of polluting vehicles on city roads, particularly those with high traffic, where emissions are most concentrated.

Fines on Private and Public Vehicles
According to media sources, private cars found emitting smoke will face a Rs. 2,000 fine for the first offense, which doubles to Rs. 4,000 for repeated violations. For public transportation, vehicles such as buses and vans must remain parked at bus stations until their emissions are adequately repaired. These fines and restrictions reflect the government’s increased focus on reducing emissions from both private and public vehicles as part of the wider anti-smog campaign.
Smog’s Health Impact in Lahore
Lahore, ranked high on the AQI (Air Quality Index), is grappling with severe smog issues that impact citizens' health, causing respiratory problems, visibility concerns, and eye irritation. The city’s air pollution is primarily attributed to vehicle emissions, especially during the winter season. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that although the government is working hard to control pollution, overcoming this decade-long challenge will require sustained efforts and time.
Potential Use of Artificial Rain
In addition to fines and restrictions, some reports suggest that the government is considering artificial rain as a potential solution to smog. Since rain can naturally cleanse the air, this could provide temporary relief from pollution. However, the long-term impact of such measures remains uncertain.
