Heavy Penalties for Smoky Vehicles in Punjab
Punjab's Caretaker Minister for Transport, Ibrahim Hasan Murad, has disclosed key statistics regarding the government's rigorous measures against vehicles emitting smoke. The official data indicates that over 1700 vehicles have been impounded, and a substantial fine of Rs. 80 million has been imposed as a response to air pollution in the recent weeks.
In discussions with a local media outlet, Minister Murad shared that out of the 71,000 vehicles inspected, 5.6 percent were found to be in violation of government directives on emission reduction, emitting harmful smoke. Additionally, the Punjab Transport Authority Enforcement Wing is actively taking strict actions against vehicles associated with private schools, colleges, and universities. Notably, motorcycles have been identified as the primary contributors to pollution, as highlighted by the minister.
Interestingly, while other vehicles are subject to impoundment, motorcyclists are issued fines and warnings, given their predominant representation from the labor class. Minister Murad also mentioned the government's utilization of cloud seeding to enhance the likelihood of rainfall.
With an apparent improvement in the Air Quality Index (AQI), Punjab has opted to lift the smart lockdown that was implemented to address the smog issue. Caretaker Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a statement on social media, noted that the decision was made following consultations with experts and the Punjab environment department.
