Honda Recalls 5 Million Cars Due to Fuel Pump Issues

In a significant move, Honda is recalling close to 5 million cars globally due to the risk of fuel pump failure, with over half of the affected vehicles located in the United States. The Japanese automaker is taking action to replace fuel pumps and address a specific defect that elevates the risk of crashes, particularly in about 2.6 million vehicles in the USA.

2.6M Honda and Acura Recall in the U.S

The recall in the United States by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) encompasses a wide range of Honda and Acura models manufactured between 2017 and 2020. Included in the recall are popular models such as the Honda Accord, Honda Civic, and Acura TLX. Honda's press release highlights a fuel pump impeller issue, which, if not addressed, can render the fuel pump inoperative. The statement warns that such a malfunction could lead to engine failure, either preventing the engine from starting or causing it to stall while driving, thereby increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

No Crashes, Thousands of Claims

Although Honda has not received any reports of crashes or injuries linked to fuel pump impeller issues, the company has acknowledged receiving 4,042 warranty claims related to the problem since 2018. In response, Honda's U.S. subsidiary plans to notify affected vehicle owners in stages as replacement parts become available. According to the automaker, dealers will receive notifications between December 2023 and February 2024, as outlined in a federal recall report.

Global Impact with Recalls in China and Japan

This recall extends beyond the borders of the United States, as Honda Cars 2024 has initiated similar recalls in China and Japan. The affected models include those from the 2018-2020 model years, spanning a broad range such as the Honda Accord, Civic, CR-V, HR-V, Insight, Ridgeline, Odyssey, Passport, and various Acura models, including the ILX, MDX, RDX, RLX, TLX, and NSX vehicles. The company is actively addressing the fuel pump issue to ensure the safety of its global customer base.
