Hybrid vs. PHEV vs. HEV: What's the Difference?

The global shift towards sustainable energy vehicles is gaining momentum as the energy and climate crisis intensifies. Traditional internal combustion engines (ICEs) are being rapidly replaced by hybrid and electric powertrains, marking a significant transformation in the automotive industry.

Rising Appeal of Hybrids and EVs
Hybrid, plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are becoming increasingly popular. Their appeal lies in low or zero emissions and superior fuel efficiency, making them a preferred choice for environmentally conscious consumers.

How Hybrids Operate
Hybrids differ from conventional gasoline vehicles by using both a petrol engine and an electric motor. These vehicles can switch between the two power sources depending on driving conditions. At lower speeds, the electric motor is primarily used, while both the motor and engine work together during higher power demands. Hybrids offer the convenience of traditional vehicles without the need for external charging, plus benefits like regenerative braking and lower emissions. However, they can have higher servicing costs and less power compared to fully electric vehicles.

Comparing PHEVs and Hybrids
Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) take hybrid technology a step further by incorporating the ability to charge via an external power source. This feature allows PHEVs to operate on electric power for longer distances compared to standard hybrids. With models like the 2022 Toyota RAV4 Prime and Ford Escape, PHEVs provide an extended electric-only range, making them suitable for both short trips and longer journeys with the assistance of a gasoline engine once the battery depletes.

Perspectives from Pakistan
In Pakistan, the practicality of PHEVs is debated due to high fuel prices and electricity costs. Conventional hybrids might be more beneficial for short, inter-city travel as they do not require external charging, reducing electricity expenses. HEVs like the Haval H6, Jolion, and Toyota Corolla Cross are notable options in the market, offering a balance of electric and gasoline power without the need for plugging in, unlike the sole PHEV option, the MG HS.
