Hydrogen-Powered Toyota Corolla Cross Unveiled

During this year's Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS), Toyota Motor Corp introduced the Corolla Cross Hydrogen Concept, showcasing its diverse strategy for achieving carbon neutrality. This innovative concept, initially revealed in December, sets itself apart by foregoing the use of a fuel cell stack to power an electric motor. Instead, the Corolla Cross Hydrogen employs the 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine from the GR Corolla, expertly adapted with high-pressure hydrogen direct injection for power generation.

Incorporating a hydrogen internal combustion engine, this technology involves compressing hydrogen and air within the cylinders. The mixture is ignited by a spark plug, resulting in a controlled explosion that harnesses mechanical power to drive the engine pistons, propelling the vehicle forward. This approach aligns with environmental sustainability as the combustion of pure hydrogen generates only harmless water. To accommodate the hydrogen fuel tanks, the concept positions them beneath the rear seats and the trunk floor.

Beyond its environmentally friendly combustion, hydrogen internal combustion engine vehicles offer swift refueling and contribute to reduced reliance on materials like lithium and nickel that are typically used in battery production.

Although the hydrogen fuel tanks do occupy underfloor space, smart engineering permits the concept to comfortably seat up to five individuals and stow items above the boot floor.

However, the low density of hydrogen necessitates a sizeable fuel tank for achieving sufficient range. The vehicle is currently undergoing testing in Japan to enhance power output, refueling speed, and engine efficiency.

With the Corolla Cross Hydrogen Concept undergoing testing in Japan, Toyota asserts that they are making significant progress toward commercializing the vehicle, with approximately 40% of the process complete. Notably, the GR Corolla H2 competed in Super Taikyu endurance races in Japan last year, serving as a testbed for hydrogen internal combustion engines. Prior to this, the GR Yaris H2 was showcased in the WRC arena, further underscoring Toyota's commitment to innovative propulsion technologies.
