Hyundai & Kia Recall 113K Cars Over Fire Risks

In response to fire risks, Hyundai and Kia are recalling over 113,000 newer vehicles in North America. The safety concern has prompted both automakers to advise owners to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until repairs are carried out.

Affected Models and Geographic Scope of the Recall

The recall encompasses various models, including the Hyundai 2023-2024 Palisade, 2023 Tucson, Sonata, Elantra, and Kona vehicles, as well as the 2023-2024 Kia Seltos, 2023 Kia Soul, and Sportage vehicles. The United States sees around 52,000 Hyundai vehicles and nearly 40,000 Kia vehicles involved, while Canada has 11,000 Hyundai vehicles and 10,700 Kia vehicles subject to the recall.

The Cause of the Recall and Repair Plan

Hyundai and Kia have identified that the electronic controllers for the Idle Stop & Go oil pump assembly may contain damaged electrical components, leading to potential overheating of the pump. As a remedy, owners will be notified in late September, and authorized dealers will inspect and replace the electric oil pump controller as necessary. Additionally, the heat damage could result in a short circuit affecting other vehicle controllers.

Reports of Incidents and Response from Automakers

Kia has received six complaints potentially linked to thermal occurrences, but no accidents or injuries have been reported. Similarly, Hyundai has recorded four comparable reports. In a prior communication with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, both companies confirmed that a questionable part had already been removed from production.

Safety Measures for Vehicle Owners

Hyundai has advised dealers to provide rental vehicles for customers who feel unsafe operating their affected vehicles until the recall fix is available. If owners detect any signs of a burning or melting odor, they are urged to have the vehicle towed to the nearest Hyundai dealer rather than attempting to drive it.
